Nakina's love of learning was on full display this week as she tackled new tricks, started Rally jumps, and moved closer to earning her AKC Fit Dog Silver title.
🐾 Tricks
Nakina is absolutely loving tricks right now. I think she would happily train all day if we focused entirely on trick work.
I also believe she may have completed all of the requirements for AKC Fit Dog Silver. We are currently waiting for instructor feedback on the final two weeks, as well as her certificate, before submitting the title application to AKC.
Training
Nakina did not have her private training session this week because her trainer was away at a show with her dogs.
Our Rally Skills class went extremely well. We introduced very low jumps this week. Nakina wasn't quite sure what I was asking at first, but she trusted me enough to try. Once she understood the exercise, she seemed to genuinely enjoy it.
Intermediate Tricks was also a lot of fun. We learned several new tricks and have been practicing them throughout the week.
We are continuing our three highly focused 10-minute walks each day. It's still challenging work, but Nakina is gradually developing a better understanding of loose leash walking and making steady progress.
Socialization
While there are still a few specific situations we need to work through, Nakina is generally comfortable with most of the people, dogs, and environments she encounters.
Our remaining goals are fairly targeted. We still need to complete elevator work and spend more time on certain aspects of grooming. Recently, training has been the primary focus, so these areas have taken a temporary back seat.
What's Next
- Emergency Stop & Hand Targeting — reintroduce and build consistency
- Down vs. settle — continue creating a clear distinction
- Stay — increase distance, duration, and distractions
- Recall — continue on leash in more distracting environments
- Travel Crate — zipping with no stress
- Grooming — begin grooming desensitization on the table
- Continue elevator desensitization
This week was a good reminder that training should be enjoyable. Watching Nakina light up during tricks and confidently tackle new challenges made it clear just how much she enjoys learning.
